Eritrean Teklay Azerya and Italian Valentina Belotti Manzi won 14. WMRA Grand Prix 2012.

This Saturday, October 6.,&nbsp,2012,&nbsp,a mountain on the edge of Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana hosted one of the races with the longest tradition – the Smarna gora race was this year organized for the 33. time.
The race was also WMRA Grand Prix Finals after cancellation of the race in Bursa, Turkey.
The Smarna gora race once again shone in all its beauty.

“Not only the weather conditions were perfect with sun shining and almost ideal temperatures but about 180 contesters from 12 countries created great atmosphere on the top of the mountain.
Athletes competed on 10 kilometers of technically demanding course which has been changed two years ago making it a bit longer and less dangerous.
In the men’s division a group of athletes from Italy, Eritrea, Switzerland and Slovenia dictated the pace of the race but in the crucial fight in the last meters Alex Baldaccini (ITA) showed more strength and finished first only a tenths of a second before Teklay Azerya (ERI).
They both improved the record of the race for 30 seconds and record is now set on 41 minutes and 32 seconds.
In women’s competition Slovene champion Mateja Kosovelj (SLO) did not allow any surprises and lead from start to finish improving the record of the course for no more than 2 seconds. After failing to qualify in the Olympic marathon she was highly motivated to improve her position in WMRA Grand Prix placement and she succeeded with excellent performance on Smarna gora. The second to finish the race was Stevie Kramer (USA) before Valentina Manzi Belotti (ITA) who finished third.
The Smarna gora race was also the finale of the 2012 Grand Prix competition.
Both Teklay and Manzi Belotti had to do their best and finish in top positions if they wanted to keep winning position in Grand Prix and we had to admit that they showed great performance and didn’t make any mistakes.
But the ranking on other positions is completely mixed after the final race.
In men’s competition Teklay Azerya (ERI) won with 404 points, followed by Alex Baldaccini (ITA) with 327 points and Gabriele Abate (ITA) with 305 points. Last year’s Smarna gora and Grand Prix winner Ahmet Arslan (TUR) ended fourth (233 points) and showed that we can count on him again next year, since he is now recovering after some health problems.
In women overall placement Valentina Belotti Manzi (ITA) won with 357 points. Iva Milesova (CZE)&nbsp, took second place with 283 points before Mateja Kosovelj (SLO)&nbsp, with 267 points.

Smarna gora will host again the WMRA Grand Prix final.

The International Smarna Gora Mountain Running Race remains one of the highlights of the mountain running season, and its rich tradition will continue on Saturday, October 6, with its 33rd edition.
After Turkish organizers in Bursa canceled what was to be the final race of the 2012 WMRA Grand Prix circuit, the Smarna Gora race organizing committee met and the decision was made to help the WMRA by again hosting this top class international mountain running event as the final race in the Grand Prix.
In spite of the change of the Grand Prix final race date — from September 22 to October 6 — and a different type of mountain course — up/down vs uphill, the WMRA Grand Prix final will attract many top runners to the slopes of Smarna gora.

“In the autumn and fall season of 1979 running enthusiasts from Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital, decided to organize a race to the top of one of the most popular mountains in Slovenia at Smarna Gora.
Nobody envisaged that it would become such a massive event with worldwide popularity.
The WMRA Grand prix champions of the world will again be crowned this Saturday at this magnificent mountain peak.
In the early 1990s the event was the first national championships in the new nation of Slovenia and later that decade, world champion Lucio Fregona (ITA) made the &copy, marna Gora race an internationally recognized event.
After the millennium, the &copy, marna Gora race became one of the founding members of the WMRA Grand Prix and since than it has been the final Grand Prix event on ten occasions.
In the last 33 years many world champoin medalists have been tested on the demanding course that takes runners 360 meters uphill to the first summit, followed by 300 meters of technical descent before a 300 meter climb to the finish.
The top men will race just over 40 minutes for this 10-kilometre course.
This Saturday, the best mountain runners will again meet to test their strength, speed and skills.
This will be the first meeting after the World Championships and many will strive to climb the famous podium at Smarna Gora.
This will be a tall order, as the top female runners will include World Championship second place finisher Valentina Belotti (just married Emanuele Manzi, ITA) and Mateja Kosovelj (SLO) who took sixth place.
Stevie Kremer (USA), the 2012 WMRA World Long Distance Challenge winner, will also try to earn a spot on the podium.
Slovenia’s Lea Einfalt, the World Junior Championships bronze medalist, is expected to be a factor at some stage of this wonderful festival of mountain running in Slovenia.
In the men’s event, six-time European champion Ahmet Arslan of Turkey, returns to defend his Smarna Gora title from 2010 and 2011.
Strong Eritrean team members will test the Smarna gora course for the first time, Teklay Azeria, 3-times world vice-champion and Grand Prix current leader will do his best to improve upon Arslan’s course record and his fellow team member Tekle Yossief, 2010 junior world Champion (Kamnik-Slovenia) will try to repeat his successful run on Slovenian soil.
Mitja Kosovelj of Slovenia is well positioned to offer a strong challenge since he knows the course very well.
David Schneider (SUI) will test his recovery on Smarna gora.
Other world-class male mountain runners include the always-strong Italian and British national team members: Gabriele Abate, Alex Baldaccini, Emanuelle Manzi, Orlando Edwards, Gary Priestley and many others.

At 15K, Stevie was in the second or third pack of women and Kim was a little farther back with about 1-2 minutes on the rest Melody, Brandy, Ashley, and Gina running as a group. They all ran so smart beginning to move up as the climbing began, then continuing to move forward as the sustain climbs of the second half of race wore on. Ugandan Stephen Kiprotich, Marathon Olympic Champion 2012, shows that mountain running is athletics!

Stephen Kiprotich run the race of his life to become only the second Ugandan to win Olympic Gold (John Akii-Bua won the 400m hurdles in the 1972 Games in Munich to bag the first ever gold).
He is a long-distance&nbsp, runner and his career shows to everybody that among the discipline of athletics there is also mountain running.
Uganda Athletics Federation was one&nbsp, of the first Federation in Africa that considered mountain running as discipline of athletics and decided that a great number of its runners must take part to international&nbsp, mountain races,&nbsp,at the same time competing in marathon or cross country or track (10 km., 5 km. &nbsp,or 3.000 mt steeplechase): it seems a winning policy!”

Kiprotich was born on 27 February 1989 in Kapchorwa.
At the age of seventeen he moved to Eldoret, Kenya to pursue his career as a long distance runner. He is the youngest of seven children.
This year alone Kiprotich had four international exposures in the marathon, 30km and half marathon with three events in Tokyo and the other in Manchester to given him enough preparation for the Olympics.
He is now the 2012 Olympic Marathon champion after stunning a field with a host of Kenyans and Ethiopians.
Kiprotich’s win puts the 23yr old in an elite group of Ugandan athletes who have tasted Olympic success. Uganda’s other Olympic medalists are boxers Eridad Mukwanga (silver, 1968), Leo Rwabwogo (bronze, 1969 and silver, 1972), John Mugabi (silver, 1980) and middle distance runner Davis Kamoga (bronze, 1996).
As told, all knows the Stephen Kiprotich honor’s race like follow:
– cross country: finished 6. at the 39. IAAF World Cross Country Championships 2011 (Punta Umbr&iacute,a) and 23. at 37. IAAF World Cross Country Championships 2009 (Amman) and when he was Junior he finished 12. at 36. IAAF World Cross Country Championships 2008 (Edinburgh), 19. at the 35. IAAF World Cross Country Championships 2007 (Mombasa) and 24. at the 34. IAAF World Cross Country Championships2006 (Fukuoka).
– 10 km.: finished 6. Senior in the 2010 Africa Championships in Nairobi and 5. Junior at 12th IAAF World Junior Championships 2008 (Bydgoszcz),
– 5 km: he run an heat (finished 16.) at 11th IAAF World Championships in Athletics 2007 at Osaka.
– marathon: finished 9. in the 13. IAAF World Athletics Championship in Daegu 2011, his personal best in marathon is 2:07:20 run on 2011 in Enschede.
But a very few people remember and note that Stephen Kiprotich finished 5. senior at the 26. WMRA World Mountain Running Championships 2010 at Kamnik (Slovenia) and was also fourth as member of Uganda Team in the Nation result (behind Eritrea, USA and Italy)!
No words more, but it is a pity that in the statistics information the results in mountain running are often forgot!
