4. Harakiri Mountain Race 2012:clash of the

The starting shot for the Harakiri Mountain Race was fired once again in Mayrhofen on the 5. August 2012.
Amateur athletes were given the opportunity to test their sporting prowess against the cr&egrave,me de la cr&egrave,me of the mountain sports scene.
270 athletes from over 20 nations travelled here to take on the challenge in wonderful weather conditions. Steep, steeper, steepest. The runners battled it out to the finishing line over a distance of 10.4 km and 1,170 metres in altitude. Last year’s winner in the men’s discipline, Azaria Weldemariam from Eritrea, retained his crown and won with a time of 52:02,30. Austrian Sabine Reiner won the women’s category with a time of 1:01:20,60. The Harakiri Mountain Race is part of the International Austrian Mountain Running Cup, tour stop of the WMRA Grand-Prix and Salomon Running Tour.
For the first time this year, Mayrhofen was also host to the Tyrolean Championships with a designated race route for junior athletes.”
“Top athletes such as Markus Kr&ouml,ll, Gerrit Glomser, Jonathan Wyatt, ski jump legend Andreas Goldberger, Antonella Confortola and Emma Clayton returned again this year to the popular sporting region of Mayrhofen in Zillertal.
Reason enough for many amateur athletes to test their mettle on the mountain the hard way. Pain and torment are guaranteed. Markus Kr&ouml,ll, who was running his final short distance mountain race, was overcome by the – as he calls it – goose bump atmosphere. Both he and ski legend Andreas Goldberger enjoyed the cheers at the finishing line and performed a lap of honour in the finishing area. Austrian race cyclist, Gerrit Glomser, who took part for a third time, was overwhelmed by this year’s Harakiri Mountain Race: &bdquo,Because of an injury I took it slowly this year and was able to enjoy running in the mountains with fantastic weather conditions even more.&quot,
For the very first time, the Harakiri Mountain Race was part of the Tyrolean Championships. With a remarkable time of 55:07,1, the undisputed Tyrolean men’s champion is Simon Lechleitner and Tyrolean women’s champion is Susanne Mair, with a time of 1:07:38,4.
The men’s track record of exactly 50:00 minutes remains firmly in the hands of Azarya Weldemarian from Eritrea. Austrian athlete, Sabine Rainer wins with the women’s benchmark time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 20 seconds. Top athletes and amateur runners will certainly be aiming to break that course record, guaranteeing an exciting race for next year.
The next WMRA Grand Prix is the World Mountain Running Championships in Ponte di Legno, Italy on September 2.

2. Grand Prix race in Slovenia: winners from Eritrea and Czech Republic.

A record number of 268 Runners from 16 countries gathered on the start line of the 14th Grintovec race in a beautiful valley of Kamniska Bistrica 25km north from Ljubljana.
The weather forecast was promising sunny hot day with lots of humidity and light west wind above 2000m – not too bad conditions for the top runners who had plans to attack women’s and men’s course records from 2006.”
“The three Eritreans and Ahmet Arslan from Turkey started with a high pace although nobody knew the difficult 10km course with almost 2000 m elevation, all the other runners respected the famous runners and run their own race up to the middle of the course, where the leading runners started to pay the price of the high pace in very hot weather.
Azeryra Teklay was the only one who could keep the pace but the others were one by one overtaken by the runners who had more respect to the steep course.
Arslan kept the second position, but Nejc Kuhar, who is a specialist for such steep courses, improved his position in the last part to reach bronze medal.
In the women’s race the situation was very similar – Mateja Kosovelj from Slovenia run the first part of the course with her normal pace for 45minutes races, in the upper part she was overtaken by Emma Clayton from GBR and later winner Iva Milesova from Czech Republic.
Emma was leading the women’s race up to some hundred meters before the finish, where she was not enough attentive and she tripped up and Iva used this moment to get the gold medal.
Both course records will remain a challenge for the next years, Anna Pichrtova and Jonathan Wyatt will stay on the top positions of the &quot, all times top results&quot,.
The organizers did a really great job, all the runners enjoyed the hospitality and excellent course preparation with lots of well supplied refreshing stations along the course.
The next station of the WMRA Grand Prix will be next Sunday in Mayrhofen/AUT.

WMRA Grand Prix resumes in Kamnik for the second stage.

After the European and NACAC Mountain Running Championships, more than 200 runners from 17 countries have entered the 14th edition of &quot,The Grintovec Mountain running race&quot,, the second stage of 2012 WMRA Grand Prix, that will be held on Sunday 29. July in Kamnik, Slovenia.
There will lots of famous runners among the starters.”

In the men’s division, Ahmet Arslan from Turkey, the six times European Champion will try to repeat his success from 2011. He will find his strongest opponents in the team from Eritrea.
Azeira Teklay, second from World Championships 2010 in Kamnik and Kidane Abraham, sixth places from the same competition will try to defeat the best European Mountain runner.
Local Nejc Kuhar, the winner of ISF &quot,Kilometer vertical&quot, in Canazei just a week ago and one of the best extreme skiers, will surely try to show his power on the home mountain in a WMRA event.
In the women’s division Denisa Dragomer from Romania and Emma Clayton from GBR will take the advantage of the absence 2011 winner Lucija Krkoc from Slovenia.
The weather forecast promises excellent conditions for the runners so the best will try to attack the course records.
In particular it will be possible that Arslan and the Eritreans can challenge the current record of 1:15:43 by Jonathan Wyatt from 2006.
Women’s record 1.31:50 set by Anna Pichrtova also in 2006 seems to remain unbeaten for this year.
In 2011 the organizer had to shorten the course due to the extreme weather conditions – during the race-time, the summit of the mountain got over 20cm of snow.
The details of the traditional course: the distance is 9.6km with a 1980 metre elevation.
This is a real mountain running race, held in pure, untouched nature.

Gold for Ireland, Italy and Poland in 7. Youth International Cup 2012

The 7th staging of the WMRA International Youth Cup was held in Glendalough Ireland.
This was the first occasion that Ireland hosted a major international mountain running event and it represented a further stage in the development of mountain running for this younger age group (16-17 year olds).
Nine countries entered the competition with Ireland, Russia, and Wales fielding two boys teams and Ireland and Russia entering two girls teams.

The course was set against a backdrop of the Upper Lake in Glendalough which is framed by the Spink and Camaderry mountains with an old mining village to the west and a historic monastic site to the east.
All of the countries trained on the course on the day before the race giving the athletes and managers an introduction to Wicklow midges and to the ever changing Irish weather.
Over breakfast on Sunday, the sun emerged and with it a day of fine weather for the runners and spectators.
Children from the local Gaelic Athletic Association club acted as flag bearers for the short opening ceremony which was presided over by the President of WMRA Bruno Gozzelino.
The girls had a short run-in of 110 metres followed by two laps of 1660m each for a total distance of 3540m with 190 metres of ascent. At the end of the first lap Ksenia Makhneva (RUS) led by around 10 metres from Sarah Hodgson (ENG) and Clare McCarthy (IRE). Caitriona Graves (SCO) was in fourth followed by Sara Jesenko (SLO), Chiara Spagnoli (ITA), Alina Subbotina (RUS B), and Weronika Pyzik (POL). The pace was fast and was likely to bring the steepish climb into play on the last lap for anyone who started too fast. Emerging into the finishing run-in Pyzik had moved through from eight into the lead with Hodgson and Makhneva on her heels. Despite a fierce battle up the home straight Pyzik held on for a narrow win from Hodgson with Makhneva two seconds behind the winner. Attention turned to the team tallymen as they marked off the first Irish runner in fifth, an Italian in eight, another Irish runner in tenth, a Russian in eleventh, an Italian in thirteenth, and the vital third Irish scorer in fourteenth.
With the calculations done the host country had won by eight points from Italy (37) and Russia (37) and it felt as though the sun was emerging even more to bathe the valley in sunshine.
The pictures of the leading girls were hardly taken when the boys were called to the starting line. They had three laps covering a total of 5200 metres. The 2011 silver medallist Konstantin Galiullin (RUS) was the favourite but in this age group there are many unknown athletes in the shadows. Six runners were bunched together at the end of the first lap with Galiullin leading from Nadir Cavagna (ITA), Yemanebehran Crippa (ITA), Gwynant Jones (WAL), Patryk Lachowski (POL), and Andrew Lawler (SCO). The first Irish runner Killian Mooney was ten metres back after recovering quickly from a fall on the first lap. At the end of lap two, the race was down to two runners as Crippa and Galiullin had gone clear and were still looking like they had kept something for the last lap. James Hall (ENG) had worked his way through from ninth to third, ahead of Cavagna, and ominously the third Italian runner, Danilo Gritti, had moved through from tenth to fifth. The places remained largely unchanged on the final lap except for Crippa opening a clear winning margin of 21 seconds from Galiullin and Cavagna.
The Italian runners were convincing winners of the team title with an exceptionally strong performance. Bulgaria had four points on Ireland at the end of the second lap and they maintained this to take the silver medals ahead of the host nation.
Bruno Gozzelino, John Foley (Chief Executive of Athletics Ireland), the WMRA technical delegate Bashir Hussain, and the President of the Irish Mountain Running Association Dermot Murphy Helped by Raimondo Balicco and Tomo sarf, other two WMRA Council memembers present at the event) presented the individual and team trophies.
Six of the nine nations stood on the podium after a closely contested competition.
Only four points separated the fourth to sixth teams in the boy’s race, and only four points separated the fourth to seventh placed teams in the girl’s race.
