WMRA Grand Prix – 4th event of the seven race series.

The answer to the rhetorical question &lsquo,Can anyone beat Wyatt?’ (IAAF report on 31st July) is NO or at least, not yet

&nbsp, &nbsp, &nbsp,

&nbsp,

Schlickeralm (Telfes, Austria)

Anna Pichrtova (CZE)

Jonathan Wyatt (NZL)

Jonathan (NZL) won the fourth Grand Prix race on Sunday against his constant shadow, Marco Gaiardo (ITA), by two minutes in a time of 58.14 for the 11km/1300m climb course. With three victories in the Grand Prix series and best four to count, Jonathans lead is virtually unbeatable. The race for second place was a thrilling affair with the next four runners all finishing within 30 seconds of each other and in a desperate sprint finish Gaiardo just managed to breast the tape one second in front of Rickey Gates (USA). Gaiardo thus settles into second place in the GP ranking.

The anticipated dual between Anna Pichrtova (CZE) and Martina Strahl (SUI) did not materialise when the latter did not make the start line. It was therefore left to Anna to register another comfortable victory beating the young Mateja Kosovelj (SLO) by 3 minutes 40 seconds. Grand Prix leader Anne Buckley had an indifferent run finishing only 21st and slipping to third ranking place. The Grand Prix leader is now Anna Frost (NZL) who ran strongly to finish fourth . European bronze medallist Sarah Tunstall (GBR) finished fifth and so moves up to fourth position in the ranking.

The fifth Grand Prix race takes place on August 10th in Ebensee (Austria)

It is difficult to see anyone beating Jonathan Wyatt (NZL) who continues his remarkable unbeaten run in uphill mountain races. The 11km/1300m climb course is his territory and he already leads the Grand Prix standing with two victories.

The race for second place will be interesting with Marco Gaiardo (ITA) under pressure from Andrezj Dlugosz (POL), Alex Bolkjovitin (RUS), Roman Skalsky and Robert Krupica (CZE) and Georges Burrier (FRA).

The women race over the same course as the men making this one of the tougher of the Grand Prix races. The outcome is more unpredictable than the mens race since both Anna Pichrtova (CZE) and Martina Strahl (SUI) face each other for the first time this year. It is Anna’s first Grand Prix race of the series, but Martina already has two wins so it will be a crucial contest. Anne Buckley (GBR) leader of the Grand Prix rankings, having competed in all three races to date, will be hoping to consolidate her leading position for the time being. Challenging for the minor places will be Anna Frost (NZL), Victoria Wilkinson (GBR) Sarah Tunstall (GBR) and Eva Milesova (CZE)

2009 WMRA mountain running calendar

The WMRA calendar for 2009 will be expanded to include those mountain races worldwide who would welcome participation of athletes from countries other than their own. Read on&hellip,&hellip,&hellip,&hellip,&hellip,&hellip,&hellip,&hellip,&hellip,.

&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,

These races need not necessarily be classed &lsquo, international&rsquo, and the only requirement is that they are well organised (for this we depend on the reports of athletes taking part). Inclusion in the calendar is free of charge.

The following details should be sent to WMRA secretary Bruno Gozzelino by e-mail (bgozzel@libero.it).

&nbsp,

1. Date of event.

2. Location.

3. Distance and amount of climb/descent

4. Event web page address Or Name and contact details of the organiser.

&nbsp,

The deadline is mid September, but there is a large amount of work to be done so send your information as soon as possible.

Those races who wished to be classified as WMRA Associate Member races for a small fee ($100) and enjoying some additional benefits should ask for an Associate Member application form.

Commonwealth Championship for Mountain Running and Ultra Distance

Having received the green light from the Commonwealth Games Federation in May 2007 to press ahead with organising a Commonwealth Championship in Ultra Distance and Mountain Running, we are pleased to announce that at last the financial arrangements, the venue, and the date have been agreed
“At a recent Cabinet meeting of the Cumbria County Council (GBR), it was agreed that the County become the &lsquo,Accountable body&rsquo, for the championships. This decision releases significant amounts of money from the Northwest Development Agency (NWDA) for the event to be held in the Northwest of England in the Cumbrian town of Keswick. The date of the four days of competition will be September 17th-20th 2009

&nbsp,

Keswick was the venue of the successful World Masters Mountain Running Championships in 2005.

The funding is in place to guarantee the staging of the championships and some monies are in place to support commonwealth countries towards their accommodation costs. Sponsorship from the commercial sector is expected to cover the cost of the festival of sport which will accompany the championships. The festival will focus on youth and school children introducing them to the atmosphere of international athletics and encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

The Championship programme will comprise two Ultra distance races over 100km and 24 hours, and two Mountain races, one being uphill only and the other an up/down race starting and finishing in the towns Fitz Park.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District, Keswick benefits from ideal natural terrain, and experience of organising many mountain races, road races, and important cultural events.

The date has been carefully chosen not to clash with the peak tourist season or other town events and to be just one week separated from the 2009 World Mountain Running Trophy when many commonwealth mountain running athletes will be present in Europe to represent their countries.

European Mountain Running Championships

The seventh edition of the European Mountain Running Championships gets under way in Germany on Saturday 12th July. Athletes from twenty-six countries will compete on the up/down courses in the small town of Zell am Harmersbach in the Black Forest.

The current senior womens champion, Anita Evertsen Hakenstadt (NOR), who won on the uphill only course in France, will not defend her title, but in the mens race, champion Ahmet Arslan (TUR), and seven out of last years top ten are present.

However, multiple world champion in the up/down races, Marco de Gasperi (ITA), European silver medallist last year, must start as favourite once more. The most likely challengers to the dominant Italians for the team title appear to be the French led by previous European bronze medallist Julien Rancon. The 12km course contains 804m of ascent and 714m of descent.

The womens race is quite open and predicting the three who will stand on the podium is guesswork. Victoria Wilkinson (GBR) has been running well in the Grand Prix races. Elisa Desco (ITA), fourth in last years World Trophy, Daneja Grandovec (SLO) sixth and Iva Milesova (CZE) tenth in the same up/down race will be in contention. Joining Grandovec will the young Slovenians Mateja Kosovelj and Lucija Krkoc to make Slovenia the most likely challengers to Italy for team honours.

Their 8.75km course contains 566m of ascent and 476m of descent.

The entry for the junior races is encouraging with 15 nations sending athletes to compete in races which have not yet been awarded championship status.

The Turkish boys team looks strong with the gold and silver medallists from the recent Balkan championships, Akalin Emrah and Demir Alper included. The Junior mens course is the same as the womens.

The Junior womens course is 4km with 238m of ascent and descent. Hannah Bateson (GBR) who finished 10th in last years World Trophy will be hoping for a win before she enters the senior ranks.

With rain forecast for Saturday, choice of correct mountain running shoes will be vital.

Vist the event web page to see the full entry list.

New Web page April 2008

This newly designed web page comes to you courtesy of the European Athletics (EA) who provided the funds for Nick and Lukas of Mediasprint (Switzerland) to carry out the work.

Navigation around the page is quite straightforward and you will find much of interest. You can learn about WMRA, its constitution and Council members. You can access the documentation (rules, regulations etc) connected with our major races. There is a Calendar of Major WMRA races and Associate member races together with links to their web pages. We plan to make the calendar more extensive in 2009 so if you want your race to appear at no cost let us have details. We are now able to handle the Results and Statistics pages ourselves so these should be right up to date. It is important when sending your race results to present them in the correct format (contact Tomo Sarf for details). When using the Statistics page to search for an athletes record always use the surname first. Our sponsor now appears on the home page and has a link to his special advertisement &ndash, other potential sponsors should contact our marketing director. For those new to mountain running our article &lsquo,About Mountain Running&rsquo, gives some background information, but is not a training guide. Maybe we could introduce this later with the advice of a mountain running coach. The Anti-doping page is of special importance and all mountain runners are advised to have a rudimentary understanding of the regulations. This especially applies to our best mountain runners and those selected for out of competition testing.

Our one regret is that the language is only English. We hope to be able to rectify this in the future.

1st Balkan mountain Running Championships report

Seven Balkan countries entered athletes for the first edition of the Balkan mountain running championships on 29th &nbsp,June, Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, Romania, Serbia, Moldova, and Macedonia. Missing were Albania, Montenegro, and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The championships were held from Sapareva Banya, famous for it hot springs, and the ‘uphill only’ courses were located in an Eco-development park on the foothills of Mt Rila.

Turkey, with several years of experience winning medals in the World Trophy and European Championships swept the board in the mens senior and junior races by placing the first three in each event. In the mens race of 9km, M.Munir Cura won in a time of 50.44 with a margin of a minute over the second. The junior mens race over 6.6km was a much closer affair with just three seconds between the winner Emrah Akalin and runner-up Alper Demir.

Host nation Bulgaria place second team in both races.
Cura Munirfrunuz_copy.jpgmunir.jpg
In the 6.6km womens race the teams of Bulgaria (1st) and Romania (2nd) displaced Turkey to 3rd with Romania supplying the winner, Cristiana Frumuz in 45.40. Rumyana Panovska (Bulgaria) was second 1.49 behind.

The junior women raced over 3.4km, Turkish athletes filled the first two positions, Argun Nigar winning in 29.25, her team mate Ulu Mevlude second in 29.46, and again Turkey won the team race from Bulgaria.

Full results can be seen on the event web page.
