4th Obudu Ranch International Mountain Race

The Worlds Richest Mountain Race
Silver medallists clash

This a title proudly claimed by the organisers of the Obudu Ranch International Mountain race in Cross River state, Nigeria to be held on 29h November.

It is indeed justified with a prize list from first to tenth positions of $50,000, $15,000, $9,000 down to $2,000. Unusually for an African event, the women will receive exactly the same prize money as the men. This has attracted two of the worlds leading female endurance athletes.
2008 IAAF World Cross Country silver medallist Mestawet Tufa Demisse and 2008 IAAF World Half Marathon silver medallist, Aselefech Merga Medessa, both of Ethiopia. Their talent for competing on the 11km course which climbs steadily for 800m will be tested by the experienced 2008 World Mountain Running Champion, Andrea Mayr of Austria. Also competing will be Kedir Rehima (ETH) who won in a time of 53.26 in 2006. Jonathan Wyatt, six times and current World Mountain Running Champion will be severely tested by Kenyan, Ethiopian, Tanzanian, and Ugandan athletes. Leading the challengers will be Olympian, Geoffrey Kusuro (UGA) a past Junior World Running Champion and runner up in Obudu last year. Martin Toroitich (UGA) relegated to silver medal position in this years World Mountain Running Championship by Jonathan will be looking to reverse the tables. Last years Obudu winner Awash Fikadu (ETH) hopes to double his prize money with another $50,000 haul

WMRA Grand Prix

New Zealand celebrate double victory in overall WMRA Grand Prix standings despite defeats in last race

Ljubljana, Slovenia – The final race of the seven event 2008 WMRA Mountain Running Grand Prix series was held on 4 October in Slovenia. The race chosen to host the Grand Prix final was the 29th edition of the Smarna Gora, Ljubljana.Jonathan Wyatt (NZL), as predicted, did enough to place himself first in the final GP ranking. He finished fourth today, and with 394 points was well ahead of series runner-up Marco Gaiardo (ITA) with 350 points.Winner of today&rsquo,s race, Mitja Kosovelj (SLO) moved up to third in the ranking with 297 points.

In the women&rsquo,s division, a new race record was set today by World champion Andrea Mayr (AUT) who won comfortably from last year&rsquo,s winner, Victoria Wilkinson (GBR). Overall in the season these two finished 5th and 3rd respectively leaving the overall GP title to Anna Frost (NZL). Frost, suffering from a slight throat infection could only manage 8th in the race.Mitja Kosovelj&rsquo,s sister, Mateja, made it a family celebration finishing 3rd in the race and second in the Grand Prix ranking.

So New Zealand can boast both GP winners. Wyatt and Frost are based in Europe for much of the year.”

WMRA 2008 Grand Prix

6th Race. Schneeberlauf (Austria) September27th

&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp, Andrea Mayr (AUT)
&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp, Jonathan Wyatt (NZL)

&nbsp,

As predicted, the outcome of the sixth of seven WMRA Grand Prix races resulted in comfortable victories for recently crowned World Champions Jonathan Wyatt (NZL) and Andrea Mayr (AUT).&nbsp,Slovenians, brother and sister, Mitja and Mateja Kosovelj were second in both races………………..

“&nbsp,

Wyatt did just enough to win by just over a minute, saving his effort until the last 2km on the steep rocky mountain path, undeterred by some fresh mountain top snow, which had fallen overnight. The more difficult the terrain the more superior is Jonathan Wyatt.

Andrea Mayr’s margin of victory of more than six minutes should encourage her to let mountain running take precedence over her track ambitions in the future. Her job commitments (she is a medical doctor) prohibit the full time commitment needed to make a significant mark on the track nowadays.

&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp,&nbsp, Mitja Kosovelj
The young Kosovelj’s, only recently having moved up into the senior ranks, have the potential to be future champions which would indeed be a remarkable achievement. The road to this goal would be hard, steep and rocky!

Wyatt only needs to compete in the final Grand Prix event (Smarna Gora – Slovenia on October 4th ) to guarantee him overall victory. His compatriot Anna Frost, still leading the womens rankings, is favourite to join him making it a New Zealand double.

WMRA Grand Prix preview.

“The sixth of seven Grand Prix mountain races takes place in SE Austria on Saturday 27th

Andrea Mayr (Austria)

&nbsp,&nbsp,

It is classed as second level race which means that the points awarded are just 50% of those awarded for first level races.

Starting in the town of Puchberg (south of Vienna) the 10km course climbs 1200m to the top of the Hochschneeberg.

Recently crowned world mountain running champions Jonathan Wyatt (NZL) and Andrea Mayr (AUT) are both entered and should have little difficulty in recording emphatic wins.

A victory for Jonathan will give him a 100% points record (four wins) in the Grand Prix ranking, but since this event only attracts half the points of a first level race he will need to compete in the final Grand Prix in Slovenia to guarantee him a final first place overall. Chasing him will be Andrzej Dlugosz (POL) currently ranked 3rd, Markus Kroll (AUT) currently ranked 4th, and Ricky Gates (USA) who finished 12th in the World Trophy.

The womens Grand Prix leaders are notable for their absence – unless they turn up at the last minute. Andrea’s nearest rivals should be Mateja Kosovelj (SLO) currently ranked 7th. With only one Grand Prix race completed, Andrea would need to compete in the final Grand Prix to reach the podium for overall ranking.

About 400 athletes (men and women) are entered and all compete on the same course.

Adverse weather fails to dampen thrilling World Trophy

Sierre/ Crans-Montana (Valais – Switzerland) and the Swiss Athletic Federation staged a record breaking Trophy event on Sunday 14th September. More men and women and countries (38) than ever before. Sierre was dry but overcast. Crans-Montana, 1000m higher, was shrouded in thick mist and drizzle. This did not detract from some fine performances………

Jonathan Wyatt once again proved himself the supreme mountain runner as he recorded his sixth World title, winning in a time of 55.03 for the 12km 1046m climb course. In the fast early stages the Ugandans and Turkish runners set the pace and Jonathan hung on in about 8th position. As the course steepened he started to gain positions. With 2km to go Martin Toroitich (UGA) had a 50m lead. The course became steeper and with 500m to go Jonathan had caught Totoitich and European Champion, Ahmet Arslan. &nbsp,The last stage became a sprint with Jonathan hanging on to win from the Ugandan by just 12 seconds. It was noteworthy that the podium was occupied from athletes from three continents, Australasia, Africa and Europe. As expected the Italian men recorded yet another victory, with host country Switzerland second and USA third.

The womens race proved a great consolation prize for Andrea Mayr (AUT) who had just missed out on Olympic selection for the steeplechase for Austria. She destroyed a talented field in winning with a 59 second margin over Renate Rungger (ITA). There was a desperate sprint for the bronze medal with Elisa Desco(ITA)l, edging out Olympian Kirsten Otterbu (NOR) by 0.2 seconds. Kirsten still received a gold medal as she led the Norwegian team to victory over Switzerland by just one point.
&nbsp,

Norway confirmed their rise in the mountain running firmament as their junior men, placed second team, was &nbsp, led home by gold medalist Sindre Buraas. The strong Turkish junior team, European champions, took the gold medal position again.

England enjoyed welcome success in the junior womens race as young Laura Park had a convincing win over Turkeys Esra Gullu. With Heather Timmins in 7th position England also took the team gold.&nbsp,

This was the last occasion on which we will see England in the competition since IAAF have granted the 25th event in 2009 the official title of World Mountain Running Championships. As a result the four UK teams with be replaced by a Great Britain &amp, Northern Ireland team. The change was approved by the WMRA congress by 32 votes in favour, two abstensions and non against.&nbsp,

24th World Trophy Preview

24th World Mountain Running Trophy – 14th September Sierre/Crans-Montana (Switzerland)
A record number of 39 countries will be sending athletes to compete in what will be the last World mountain Running Trophy.
Why the last? Because IAAF Council have agreed that from next year the highly successful Trophy can become a Championship.

The spectacular Valais Canton of Switzerland hosts the event for the second year in succession. Last year, Ovronnaz were the hosts.

Men will run from Sierre to Crans-Montana, a distance of 12km and an ascent of 1046m. Jonathan Wyatt (NZL), five times World Champion will start as favourite but will not find a sixth title easy to come by. Olympian Geoffry Kusuro (UGA), winner of the junior race last year, and European mountain running champion Ahmet Arslan (TUR) will be strong challengers.

He will also face the usual challenge from the Italians (Gaiardo, De Gasperi) who he has managed to beat throughout the season.

The Womens race promises to be a classic battle. Mountain running star and current World Champion, Anna Pichrtova (CZE), will come under severe pressure from the Norwegians, Anita Hakenstad Evertson and Olympian Kirsten Otterbu. Simona Staicu (HUN) winner of last weeks Jungfrau marathon will be amongst the leaders if she recovers sufficiently. Andrea Mayr (AUT) revelles in the uphill only races and is bound to mount a strong challenge. Starting on the mens course at the 3.6km point they will run 8.4km and climb 733m.

Junior men race over the same distance and Junior women have a 4.7km 314m ascent course.

8th Masters World Mountain Running Championships

“&nbsp,
A total number of 619 masters age athletes experienced a magnificently staged mountain running occasion in the small village of Dolni Morava in the north of Czech Republic on Saturday September 6th 2008. ”
“&nbsp,

The beautiful forested mountains of the national park were bathed in warm sunshine when temperatures reached 28 degrees Celsius. Fortunately, runners were protected from the direct sunlight for most of the course by the trees on the lower slopes.

Of the 20 categories between ages 35 and 80+. The Men 50 (M50) category had the largest entry with 105 competitors. Just one woman and three men managed to complete the course for those aged 80 and over.

American Simon Gutierrez (M40) retained his title and recorded the fastest time of the day for the longer 11.3km course with 50 minutes 10 seconds.

Others to retain their titles were Jiri Libra ( CZE, M70),Rosi Pattis (ITA, W55) and Barbel Berghaus (GER, W65)

Austrian Alois Puchner (M55) recoded the fastest time for the shorter 9.9km course winning in 51.12.

Current World Champion and local girl Anna Pichrtova stormed home to win the W35 category in 55.50 for the 11.3km course.

As usual, the host country managed to win most medals by winning the team result in all but one category. Nevertheless, there was a pleasing variety of national anthems during the presentation of individual medals.

Most of the competitors stayed for the evening prize ceremony which included, and was followed by, a series of brilliant performers of all kinds: Gymnasts, dancers, singers, fire-eaters and magicians kept everyone entertained until well past midnight.

Dolni Morava had seen nothing like it before and will wait a long time to see it again

Feuerkogel – Ebensee

WMRA Grand Prix – 5th race
Start list for 13th Feuerkogel Berglauf was nearly closed when two new names appeared: Marco Gaiardo from Italy and Andrea Mayr from Austria.

A view to the mountain on the day before the race showed similar picture as 11 years ago for European Trophy – the summit was covered with heavy clouds, but the weather forecast was promising sunny morning, ideal for the race.

GAIARDO Marco

All the runners start together in Ebensee. Shortly after the start, when asphalted road changes to the steep mountain path, top runners started to make a selection – Gaiardo, Dlughos, Kroel, Kosovelj were already on the head of the field. Gaiardo was dominant all the time and wan the race with 4th best time of the course. In the history of the race only Wyatt was faster (in 2005, 06 and 07). Dlughosz was comfortably second, Kroel and Kosovelj were fighting for the third position up to the last km, where more flat path fitted more Kosovelj. In the history, only 13 results of the course are under one hour, 4 from this year.

In the women’s race Andrea Mayr – ex-world and European Champion – was running on the first position from the start to the finish, finally she improved the course record for more than 4 minutes. Ex record holder Anna Frost from New Zealand was second just 10 second behind her old record. Mateja Kosovelj (SLO) finished third – on the same position as her brother Mitja in the men’s race.&nbsp,

MAYR Andrea

In the WMRA Grand Prix competition Anna Frost is still leading with 305 points, Ana Milesova (CZE) is second and Pavla Matyasova is third. It is interesting, that we have 4 different winners in 5 GP races.

In the men’s competition Wyatt is the first position with 3 victories and 300 points, Gaiardo came closer to 260 points and Dlughosz is third with 207 points.

The next station of the WMRA Grand Prix will be after the World Trophy – SchneebergLauf as 6th GP race will take place on 28th Oct.
