MASTERS OFF-ROAD RUNNERS SET TO CONQUER MOUNT ETNA AT THE 2025 EUROPEAN MASTERS OFF ROAD RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIP



The final countdown is on for the 2025 European Masters Off Road Running Championship, set to take place from May 30 to June 1, 2025, in the picturesque town of Nicolosi, on the slopes of Mount Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano. The event will gather 583 athletes from across the continent in a celebration of strength, endurance, and spectacular natural beauty.

With the raw volcanic terrain of Mount Etna serving as both challenge and spectacle, this year’s championship promises a truly unforgettable experience for runners and spectators alike.

A Three-Day Festival of Off-Road Excellence

This year’s championship features 1,018 athlete entries, featuring 583 individual athletes across three exciting disciplines:

  • Classic Up & Down – Friday, May 30: A fast and technical 9K course with quick ascents and descents across scenic volcanic trails. A total of 409 athletes are registered (274 men, 135 women).
  • Uphill (Vertical Run) – Saturday, May 31: A grueling 1,000-meter vertical climb that finishes dramatically at 2,910 meters, near Etna’s main crater. 321 competitors (224 Men and 97 Women) will take on this extraordinary challenge.
  • Trail Running (Long Distance) – Sunday, June 1: The final and most demanding event sees 289 runners (212 men, 77 women) covering rugged, extended routes across a mix of forest and volcanic terrain.

Top masters athletes from across Europe will compete, including Luigi Bortoluzzi and Franco Torresani (Italy), Shaban Mustafa (Bulgaria), Cedric Mariethoz (Switzerland), Fernando Borrajo Del Rio (Spain), Charlotte Cotton (Belgium), Ana Cristina Aguado Mori (Spain), Monica Carl (Germany), and Angela Serena (Italy).
