First Ranking Events of 2022

This weekend sees the first races of 2022 that will contribute to the World Mountain Running Ranking.

With 4 races in 3 countries, the ranking is hitting the ground running in January 2022.

On Saturday 15th the 5th edition of the Pilancones Tunte Trail, a WMRA Associate event, will take place in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria. With 4 race in total, there are ranking points on offer in the two longest events, 25km and 34km.

Following the rough, rocky trails which typify mountain running in the Canary Islands, these are difficult races in spectacular surroundings and will be a test and a treat for all the athletes taking part.

As in previous years, there will be no shortage of talent on the startline. Pau Capell, a regular here, is back again and will be joined by the likes of Pere Aurell, Jordi Gamito, Sara Alonso and Alejandro Mayor.

Same day, different continent, The Jumping Gorilla Mountain Trail Run is the only WMRA Associate event in India and possibly the best named race in the entire calendar.

Taking place in the Sahyadri mountains, just south of the city of Pune in Maharashtra, the event is in its 3rd edition, with new races being added every year. For 2022 there are 6 races from 5km to 120km, with the 30km race, which has 1,270m of climbing, offering points on the World Mountain Running Ranking.

"The Jumping Gorilla Trail Mountain Run is in the rugged and perfectly textured ranges of Sahyadri. It is a mind baffling route, with multiple loops to explore. Each runner will experience barely palpable and harsh craggy landscapes and precipitous mountain ranges in the course of the race."

Neither will be the first ranking event of the year however, as New Zealand's time zone gives The Luxmore Grunt a 7 hour head start on Jumping Gorilla.

Keep an eye on the WMRA's social media channels for a ranking update early next week.
