CAGNATI (ITA) AND VELEPEC (SLO) TAKE VICTORY AT

THE 47TH ŠMARNA GORA MOUNTAIN RACE

Klara Velepec (SLO) completed a successful weekend on home ground at Šmarna Gora, winning both the 30th Rekord Šmarne Gore on Saturday and the traditional 47th Tek na Šmarno Goro the following day.

Saturday’s pure uphill challenge covered just 1.8 km but climbed 360 metres to the summit. Tiziano Moia (ITA) produced the fastest men’s performance in 11:07, ahead of Klemen Španring (SLO) in 11:20 and Rok Bratina (SLO) in 11:30. Velepec (SLO) took the women’s victory, setting herself up for an impressive double less than 24 hours later.

Sunday brought a very different race, with the 10 km course combining 705 metres of climbing with a fast descent before the final ascent to Šmarna Gora. Lorenzo Cagnati (ITA) led an Italian one-two in 42:55.9, with Moia (ITA) second in 43:06.4 and Španring (SLO) third in 43:35.6.

Velepec (SLO) completed her weekend double by winning the women’s race in 52:08.4, ahead of Arianna Del Pino (ITA) in 53:46.2 and Kitti Posztos (HUN) in 55:05.1.

Morning fog covered Ljubljana below, while clearer conditions higher on the mountain provided the setting for another edition of one of Slovenia’s longest-running mountain races.
